For Immediate Release: January 5, 2008
Cantor Hanita Margulies Blair will conduct Bet Havarim's Shabbat Service on Friday evening, January 18th, beginning at 7:30 PM. Bet Havarim's Shabbat Services are held in the Social Hall of St. David's Episcopal Church located on Jamar Drive in Dewitt. Assisting Blair will be members of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee, Lynda Fuchs, April Rando, and Harriet Tetley. An Oneg Shabbat reception follows the service and all members of the community are cordially invited to attend.
"We want to thank everyone who attended our December service and helped us welcome Maggid Jim Brule," said Mel Shindler, Chairman of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee. "Jim's role as Maggid and the stories he told us brought both tears and laughter and were truly inspiring to those in attendance at the service," added Shindler, continuing, "we look forward to Jim's return to Bet Havarim and will be announcing the date shortly."
Coming to Bet Havarim as guest speaker in February will be Rev. William Redfield of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville. "We will be announcing the date and details of Rev. Redfield's visit to Bet Havarim in an upcoming issue of the Jewish Observer," said Shindler.
Members of Bet Havarim's Social Action Committee are also planning future mitzvah projects to benefit the community. Members of the committee are Cathy Dutch, Toni Meltzer, and Delia Temes. "Our recent preparation of cooked meals for Sarah House in Syracuse was very well received by those who utilize the facilities of Sarah House," said Temes in a recent interview. Sarah House, located at 100 Wilbur Avenue, provides a home-away-from-home for families of hospitalized patients who are from outside the immediate Central New York area.
Bet Havarim is organized to promote and cultivate a love and understanding of our Jewish heritage, teachings, and values, and to ensure the continuation of the Jewish people. Our common strength is through communal worship, celebration, study, a commitment to Israel and its people, and the practice of mitzvoth by applying the principles of Judaism to the values and conduct of the individual, family and the society in which we live for the betterment of humanity.
