FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 26, 2006
On Friday evening, November 17th, Bet Havarim will conduct its next Shabbat worship service beginning at 7:30 PM. Bet Havarim's Shabbat services are conducted at St.David's Episcopal Church located on Jamar Drive in Dewitt. Cantorial Soloist, Hanita Margulies Blair, sings the liturgy and leads the services assisted by members of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee. An Oneg Shabbat reception is held at the conclusion of services. The public is cordially invited to attend all of Bet Havarim's worship services.
"We are very pleased to announce that Steven Sisskind of Sisskind Funeral Service will be our featured speaker at our November 17th Shabbat Service," said Mel Shindler, Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee Chairperson. "Steve's topic on November 17th will be 'Modern Interpretation of Ancient Rituals' and I am quite sure that everyone attending will find his talk interesting and extremely informative," continued Shindler.
Having served the Central New York Jewish Community as a licensed Jewish Funeral Director for the past 15 years Sisskind also serves as a board member of Temple Adath Yeshurun, Menorah Park, The Jewish Community Center, Syracuse Jewish Family Service and The Rabbi Epstein Hebrew High School. In addition he is a past President of the Onondaga-Oswego Funeral Directors' Association. A graduate of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University as well as Simmons School of Mortuary Science, Sisskind established his own Funeral Service in February 2005. "I thank our community and families who I have been honored to serve," said Sisskind recently, "and we will continue to grow and serve the Central New York Jewish Community for many years to come."
At the October Shabbat service Jeff Fuchs, a member of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee read selected readings in honor of Simchat Torah. In addition Don Kates led a discussion of the weekly Haftorah at the conclusion of the Simchat Torah readings. "We are indebted to Don Kates for the efforts on his part in researching and leading discussions of the weekly Torah Portions at our services," said Shindler, adding, "our Torah Study group began, in part, as a result of Don's leadership and a desire of some of our members to learn Torah."
Bet Havarim is organized to promote and cultivate a love and understanding of our Jewish heritage, teachings, and values, and to ensure the continuation of the Jewish people. Our common strength is through communal worship, celebration, study, a commitment to Israel and its people, and the practice of mitzvoth by applying the principles of Judaism to the values and conduct of the individual, family and the society in which we live for the betterment of humanity.
