For Immediate Release: 10/26/05
Bet Havarim's next Shabbat service will be held on Friday evening, November 18th, at St. David's Episcopal Church in Dewitt. Services begin at 7:30PM and are conducted by members of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee. Singing and leading the liturgy is Bet Havarim's Cantorial Soloist, Hanita Blair. An Oneg Shabbat follows the service.
Bet Havarim's newly formed Steering Committee chaired by Delia Temes will be meeting to explore future options for the Havurah. "We are currently seeking people who may be interested in considering working on committees in areas of involvement such as Social Action, Special Programs, Worship Services, to name but a few," said Temes. "Anyone interested can easily reach us by email at info@bethavarim.org or by phoning Marty Morganstein at 637-5390 or Mel Shindler at 478-6856," said Temes.
At Bet Havarim's October Shabbat service, liturgy and readings observing Sukkot were presented by Soloist Hanita Blair and Shabbat Committee member Helen Marcum and Committee Chair Mel Shindler.
Following the service a presentation of an essay taken from the book, God Whispers, written by Rabbi Karen Kedar was presented by Zarita Hack and Marty Morganstein. "Rabbi Kedar is Great Lakes Regional Director for the Union for Reform Judaism and is widely recognized as a spiritual leader who guides people in their spiritual and personal growth," said Morganstein. "The essay focused on concentrating on the positive in our lives on a daily basis rather than letting the negative aspects of our lives overwhelm us," said Morganstein. Following the reading a short discussion took place among those attending the service.
"We are planning our future Shabbat services to involve special liturgy and a focus on the particular week's Torah reading," said Shabbat Committee Chair, Mel Shindler, continuing, "While we currently meet on Friday evenings we want to explore and learn Torah and are now planning programming with that in mind."
