For Immediate Release: February 6, 2005
Bet Havarim's February Shabbat service will be held on Friday evening, February 18th, at St. David's Episcopal Church in Dewitt. The service begins at 7:30 PM. The public is cordially invited.
Leading prayers and song will be Bet Havarim's soloist, Hanita Blair. "Hanita's presence gives our services a new dimension," said Bet Havarim member Don Kates. "While members of Bet Havarim's Shabbat committee conduct the service, Hanita's knowledge of cantorial liturgy and her beautiful singing voice is a wonderful addition to the spirituality and enjoyment of our services," add Kates.
"Our January service was well attended in spite of the "bone-chilling" temperatures that evening," said Bet Havarim's Shabbat committee Chair, Mel Shindler. "Lemoyne College Professor John Langdon was our guest speaker and we hope to have Prof. Langdon return for his third visit to Bet Havarim in the not-too-distant future," said Shindler.
A Passover Seder is planned for 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 24th at Traditions at the Links. The Seder committee is co-chaired by Anita and Bob Burrows. Yankel & Company will cater a traditional Seder. Vegetarian food will be available upon request. According to Burrows, "We are conducting the Seder on the second night of Passover so that our families and friends who have held their first Seder in their homes will be able to join us for what we know will be an enjoyable observance of Passover." Reservations are required and further information and reservations maybe made by contacting Helen Marcum, 637-4647 or email Seder_RSVP@BetHavarimSYR.org.
A book review of Pulitzer Prize winning author Philip Roth's The Plot Against America is planned for 3 p.m., Sunday, March 6th, at the home of Toni and Jeff Meltzer, in Manlius. "This extremely provocative and powerful book presents a first-person account of what it was to be a Jew during the tragic and frightful years of the fictional presidency of Charles Lindbergh," said Bet Havarim's Marty Morganstein, adding, "It is truly a 'page turner' that is compelling and the scenario is frightening." Jeff Meltzer will lead the discussion of Roth's novel. For information and/or directions phone the Meltzer's at 682-7541 or Marty Morganstein at 637-5390.
For additional information about Bet Havarim, service schedules, D'vrei Torah, etc., visit Bet Havarim's website, send email, or phone Marty Morganstein at 637-5390 or Mel Shindler at 478-6856.
