Featured speaker at Bet Havarim's October 15th Shabbat service will be Professor Keith Bybee, Associate Professor of Political Science and the Michael O. Sawyer Chair of Constitutional Law and Politics at SU's "Campbell Public Affairs Institute" at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Dr. Bybee's topic will be "Religion and the Supreme Court." The service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at St. David's Church.

Dr. Bybee's teaching interests include public law, the politics of race and ethnicity, American politics, and political philosophy. His general concern in each of these areas is to assess the conceptual issues at stake in different political claims and practices. Professor Bybee's book, Mistaken Identity: The Supreme Court and the Politics of Minority Representation (Princeton 1998), focuses on theories of political identity at stake in the debate over race-conscious redistricting.

Professor Bybee received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1995. Prior to joining the faculty at the Maxwell School in 1992, Dr. Bybee was a member of the Department of Government of Harvard University.

Mel Shindler, chair of Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee announced, "In addition to Dr. Bybee's address, the Havurah will have its first baby naming." He stated, "I am thrilled and blessed to be asked by Frann and Harvey Albert to name their first grandchild, Renee Besheret Figueroa at the October service." Renee is the daughter of Alisa and Nelson Figueroa. In honor of their granddaughter's naming, the Albert's are hosting the Oneg Shabbat following the service.
