Bet Havarim’s November 19th Shabbat worship service will feature as guest speaker Richard Friedman, Executive Vice President of the Syracuse Jewish Federation.  Mr. Friedman’s topic will be “The Case for Giving: What does Federation Do & Where Does the Money Go?”  The service will begin at 7:30p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church located on Jamar Drive in Dewitt.

“Mr. Friedman’s talk is extremely timely given that ‘Super Sunday’ takes place on Sunday, November 21st”, said Mel Shindler, Bet Havarim’s Shabbat Committee Chair, adding, “especially in view of the many Jewish Philanthropies seeking our donations we feel that Mr. Friedman will be extremely informative and we look forward to welcoming him to Bet Havarim.”  Richard Friedman came to Syracuse in 1999 to assume the position of Executive Vice President of the Syracuse Jewish Federation after serving for four years as Executive Director of the Greater Manchester (NH) Jewish Federation.  In addition to his duties at the Federation Mr. Friedman serves on the InterReligious Council Cabinet of Faith Leaders and on the FEMA Emergency Food Shelter Local Board representing the Jewish Community.

“We are asking everyone attending our November 19th Shabbat service to bring food or related items for Jewish Family Service’s Community Links Social Action Program.  The program works with a local food pantry and with Thanksgiving approaching it is our desire to help our neighbors in need,” said Mel Shindler, Bet Havarim’s Shabbat Committee Chair.

According to Don Kates, a member of Bet Havarim’s Shabbat committee, Hanita Blair will be returning to lead the prayers and songs.  Hanita’s lovely singing voice and experience in Jewish ritual music serves to add a new dimension of spirituality and community to our Shabbat service,” stated Kates.

The Shabbat committee is currently planning the December Shabbat service and Hanukah celebration featuring the lively music of the Keyna Hora Klezmer Band.  Traditional Hanukah food will be served.

Bet Havarim’s Shabbat services are open to the public and are conducted at St. David’s Episcopal Church located on Jamar Drive in Dewitt. Shabbat Services are conducted on the third Friday evening of every month, beginning at 7:30 p.m.  The services are followed by an Oneg Shabbat reception hosted by Bet Havarim’s Shabbat Committee.  Jamar Drive is located off Maple Drive (which intersects with E.Genesee St. across from Wegman’s).  The church is handicapped accessible and there is plentiful off-street parking.
