Bet Havarim will conduct its monthly Shabbat service on Friday evening, May 21st, beginning at 7:30pm, at St. David's Episcopal Church in Dewitt.
Mel Shindler, Shabbat Committee chair announces that Mitch Jaffe, Executive Director of Syracuse Jewish Family Service will be the guest speaker. He will talk about the agency's mission, the services offered to individuals and families and why and how it is linked to the community.
Jaffe received his master's degree from SU's Marriage and Family Therapy Program and his undergraduate degree from SUNY at Binghamton. Prior to taking the position of executive director of JFS in November, 2001, he was Director of Behavioral Health at Univera Healthcare in Baldwinsville. His career has included positions with Family Therapist/Purchase Preventive Counselor, Huntington Family Center, Assistant Department Chair and Clinical Supervisor, Behavioral Health Department, Chestnut Ridge Health Center. Jaffe has given keynote addresses and presentations on such topics as Raising Kids in an “R” Rated World, Depression in Young Children, Child Abuse Risk Assessment and Reporting and Adolescent Sex Offenders. He is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor in Training of the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy.
Jaffe is originally from Amityville, Long Island and has resided in Syracuse for almost 20 years, is married to Lisa Goldberg and has 2 daughters, Sara & Annie.
Bet Havarim's Shabbat Committee plans, creates and conducts the Shabbat Services and hosts the Oneg Shabbat after each service. Participating in this service will be Mel Shindler, Zarita Hack, Anita Burrows, Frann Albert, Marty Levine, Helen Marcum, Ilse Salomon, Delia Temes, and Harriet Tetley.
The chavurah was started almost a year ago with a group of people committed to programming and worship. There has been a range of diverse speakers and programs that included last month's most successful Francis Mylon Scholar-in-Resident weekend with Rabbi Deborah Waxman, who also conducted the High Holiday Services. Waxman will return for this year's holiday services.

St. David's Church is located on Jamar Drive in Dewitt, just off Maple Drive. At the intersection of Maple Drive and East Genesee St., just across from Wegmans, proceed south on Maple Drive and take the third right turn on Jamar Drive. St. David's is handicapped accessible.
